Potboiler discovers lost interview!

Remember Audiophile? The show premiered back in May and released two episodes so far with the Potboiler Network. We had the chance to chat with co host, Ben Harsel about the show and what he sees for the future of the Audiophile series.

How did you come up with the idea for this particular podcast?
Ben: Well I simply was teamed up with Anna who had the idea for the show. I had wanted to be involved with producing a show in some way so Jacob put us together to create it.

What significance does the name ‘Audiophile’ hold?
Ben: Anna came up with the name, I guess technically it means, “one who’s obsessed with audio.”

Why do you think it’s important for people to know about what the River City has to offer?
Ben: Because it is a great place to be. Maybe it has to do with the people living here, but the energy of this town is quite apparent. It is fascinating to live amongst such a historic town while at the same time there is this upheaval of talent and experimentation in the arts. Sometimes it gets a bad rap for certain issues but we like to highlight some of the special things that make Richmond glorious.

What do you hope to gain from your show?
Ben: Knowledge of the podcast process, knowledge of the city.

What are you most looking forward to with future episodes?
Ben: Hearing crazy stories from crazy people. Or crazy stories from normal people.

What do you want your listeners to take from your shows?
Ben: Entertainment in the form of podcasting. Listening to stories and hearing other people talk about themselves or what they’re all about is crucial to learning more about your surroundings and human life in general.

Audiophile is an awesome new show that has been in production for what feels like a century. Is it worth it?

In their first episode, hosts Anna Oakley and Ben Harsel try to figure out what makes Richmond so Richmond…y.
They head to the Poe Museum, check out the Subterranean Music Collective, and even visit the Mother State Roller Girls.

Meet another one of our DJs...

This is Spencer Seda and he will be participating in our DJ Wars event this Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Shafer Court Dining Center.

He’s the one in the middle of the photo. Spencer is a freshman at VCU and has been producing music for about 2 and a half years now.

He is originally from Loudon County in Northern Virginia and you can listen to some of his originial music at http://soundcloud.com/seda .

Spencer has been DJing for about a year now, and has been mixing on a Traktor S4 alongside with Cyrus Bakhshi, another one of our DJ Wars participants, at VCU house parties.

Spencer describes his style as UK dub and dubstep based. Spencer says the main thing that sets him apart from other DJs is that he has his own style and throws in songs that he has created so the crowd doesn’t have to hear the same top 40 songs that every other DJ might play.

Sounds pretty cool, Spenc! We look forward to seeing what you’re all about on Thursday!

Getting to know our DJs

With the big event right around the corner, we want to highlight each of the DJs that will be participating this Thursday in DJ Wars at 7 p.m.

This is Cyrus Bakhshi aka DJ D3rtywae.

He is a Biochemistry major with a Pre-med and Mechanical Engineering minor. He likes playing ice hockey, bmxing, working out, and going outside. He also loves cars and tuning up, modifying cars and racing them. Cyrus is a music enthusiast and use to produce music.

We asked Cyrus a few questions to get to know him better.

How long have you been DJing?
Cyrus: I started out first producing for a year but then I moved from there to actually mixing and have been doing that for the past two years.

What would you describe your style to be?
Cyrus: Not really sure what is meant by style but I guess if it means genre then I do mainly electro and house music with some dubstep and moombahton but I do play hip-hop and top 40 as well as some persian music.

What’s one thing that sets you apart from other DJs?
Cyrus:I guess the way I mix and that I really like to mix songs into each other rather than just cutting to the next one. I use a lot of cue points and loops and some samples when I mix. I try to not use too many effects because it just distorts the song and when people want to dance they want something that is somewhat familiar and not completely different.

DJ Wars is almost here

Today, the Potboiler Network stepped out on campus to promote its upcoming event DJ Wars, which will be held this Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Shafer Court Dining Center in the heart of VCU’s campus.

At today’s event there was a live DJ Brett Wainner, giving everyone a preview of what was to come.

There will be great prizes, great food, and great music. Be sure to check it out!
